ASBESTOS

This is a draft document - please send comments or additions to jon@strandarchive.co.uk

Asbestos has been used in the manufacture of certain items of older stage/tv/film lighting equipment.

If your equipment has not been professionally serviced in some time, please check for the following:

  • Asbestos power inlet cables
Power cables covered with a white woven outer sheath are most likely asbestos. Replace with silicone-insulated (heat resistant) cable at the earliest opportunity.
  • Asbestos insulators beneath lamp base
Check for an asbestos washer under the lamp base of early "Patt" lanterns. Replace with modern equivalents.
  • Junior 8 dimmers also contain a significant quantity of asbestos.

Seek advice from local officials about the correct and safe way to dispose of asbestos in your area.

There may be other instances of asbestos in stage lighting products - please let me know if you know of any.
